The East Bulgarian is a light, moderately large horse which was only

recognised as a breed in the 1950's. The East Bulgarian was developed at the end of the 19th century at the Vassil Kolarov stud farm near Shuman and at Bojurishte near Sofia, in Bulgaria, by crossing local Arabs, Anglo-Arabs, English Thoroughbreds and English half-breeds. Once the characteristics had been established, only English thoroughbred blood was used to improve the quality of the stock and the breed was recognised in 1951. Typically, they have quiet but energetic temperaments and are nicely put together, with good conformation
